What happens after induction of labour?

The first medicine or method may soften and open the cervix before stronger contractions develop. Progress can be gradual, and the maternity team may use another method, break the waters, or start an infusion if needed. Once active labour begins, the course may resemble spontaneous labour, with pain relief options and regular checks of you and your baby.

Ask the midwife or obstetrician which method is being used and what change they are looking for before the next step. Move, rest, use breathing techniques, and take fluids as permitted. Tell the team when contractions become difficult to manage, your waters break, you notice bleeding, or you feel reduced fetal movement. If vaginal birth is not progressing safely, a caesarean section may be discussed.

During an induction, report heavy bleeding, severe constant abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, chest pain, faintness, fever, or a marked change in fetal movement immediately. After birth, seek prompt advice for heavy bleeding, worsening pain, fever, severe headache with vision changes, or a painful swollen leg. The maternity unit can tell you whether to come in urgently.

Ask why induction is recommended, how cervical change will be checked, which pain relief choices are available, and what happens if the first method does not work. Discuss how your baby's monitoring affects movement, eating, and the possibility of assisted birth or caesarean section.
