What Happens After a Hair Pull Test?

The test gives a brief snapshot of active shedding from the area examined. Hairs may be inspected at the root to help distinguish hairs released during a shedding phase from hairs broken along the shaft. The finding is not a complete diagnosis and does not measure your future hair growth.

Your history matters: recent illness, major stress, weight change, new medicines, scalp symptoms, styling practices, and the pattern of thinning can all change the interpretation. A normal pull test does not rule out every cause of hair loss.

Follow the review plan and note when shedding began, whether it is diffuse or patchy, and whether you see itching, scale, pain, or broken hairs. Use gentle hair care, avoid tight hairstyles and harsh chemical treatments, and bring a list of medicines and supplements to the appointment. If the pattern remains unclear, your clinician may discuss scalp examination, blood testing, or another targeted assessment.

Arrange an earlier assessment for rapidly enlarging bare patches, scalp pain, marked redness, pus, heavy scaling, or eyebrow or eyelash loss. Seek prompt care if hair loss follows a new medicine and is accompanied by facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread rash. A smooth patch that appears suddenly also deserves timely review.

Ask what the roots showed, whether the pattern suggests shedding or breakage, which causes fit your history, whether testing is needed, and when to return if the loss continues.
