What happens after external fixation?

After external fixation, the frame stabilises the injured bone while swelling, pin sites, circulation, and healing are checked during planned follow-up. The frame may remain while the injury heals or until another procedure is suitable.

Pins or wires connect the bone to a rigid frame outside the body. This can hold alignment while the surrounding skin and soft tissues recover. Your team may use examinations and imaging to assess position and healing. Weight-bearing and movement depend on the injury, frame design, and surgeon’s instructions.

Keep pin sites and dressings cared for exactly as taught, and do not adjust the frame yourself. Check the skin around each pin, protect the limb from knocks, and use crutches or other aids as instructed. Elevate the limb when advised, perform permitted joint exercises, and attend dressing changes and imaging appointments. Tell the team before bathing or changing dressings if instructions are unclear.

Contact the fracture team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, loosening, new pain at a pin, or fever. Seek urgent care if the limb becomes cold, pale, blue, severely swollen, newly numb, or difficult to move, or if the frame is damaged or suddenly unstable.
