What happens after diagnostic laparoscopy?

The surgeon may explain whether the pelvis looked normal or whether they saw endometriosis, adhesions, ovarian changes, or another finding. If tissue was collected, a laboratory result may take longer than the immediate surgical discussion. A diagnostic procedure can identify a possible cause without settling every question, so further imaging, treatment, or specialist review may be proposed.

Rest on the day of surgery and arrange an adult to take you home if your unit requires this. Keep the dressings clean and dry as instructed, take prescribed pain relief according to the label, and walk gently to reduce stiffness. Avoid driving, alcohol, strenuous exercise, and important decisions until the anaesthetic effects have cleared and your team says these activities are safe. Keep your follow-up appointment.

Contact your surgical team for worsening wound redness, pus, increasing pain, repeated vomiting, difficulty passing urine, or a fever. Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, heavy vaginal bleeding, chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or a swollen painful leg.

Ask: What did you see? Was a biopsy taken? When will laboratory results be ready? How should I care for the wounds? When can I drive, work, exercise, and have sex? What treatment or review is planned?
