What happens after core needle biopsy?

A pathologist studies the tissue under a microscope and prepares a report for the clinician who arranged the biopsy. The report may describe normal tissue, a non-cancerous change, a condition needing monitoring, or cancer cells. Sometimes the sample does not contain enough tissue to give a clear answer, so another biopsy or a different test may be discussed. A biopsy result is interpreted alongside the examination, scans and your medical history; it is not read in isolation.

Keep the dressing in place for the period advised by your clinic and keep the area clean and dry according to their instructions. Mild soreness, bruising or a small amount of swelling can occur. Use only pain relief your clinician considers suitable, especially if you take medicines that affect bleeding. Avoid strenuous activity involving the area until you have been told it is appropriate. Keep your results appointment, because the report may guide imaging, surveillance, surgery or another treatment. If cancer is found, the next discussion may include breast surgery such as lumpectomy, depending on the findings and your preferences.

Contact the clinic promptly for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing redness or warmth, worsening swelling, drainage, fever, or pain that is becoming stronger rather than easing. Seek urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe breathing difficulty, fainting or sudden severe pain. These symptoms need assessment because they may signal bleeding, infection or another complication, even though many people recover with simple wound care.

Ask when and how you will receive the pathology result, whether the sample was adequate, what the report means in relation to your scan, and whether you need another test or specialist appointment. You can also ask how to care for the site, when to resume exercise, and which symptoms should prompt a call.
