What happens after a cholesterol test?

A lipid profile may include total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. The result is considered alongside age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, kidney health, family history and any previous heart or circulation problems. One result does not by itself decide whether medicine is needed. Your clinician may explain whether the pattern is reassuring, needs a repeat test, or deserves a fuller cardiovascular assessment.

Ask when and how you will receive the result, and check whether another blood sample is needed. Keep a record of the figures and the clinician’s interpretation. Practical changes may include choosing more fibre-rich foods, reducing foods high in saturated fat, staying active, avoiding tobacco and addressing weight or blood pressure where relevant.
