What happens after biopsy?

The sample goes to a laboratory where specialists look at its cells and may assess features that help identify the condition. The report may take time, especially when extra laboratory tests are needed. A result can be benign, abnormal, or consistent with cancer; the wording needs to be interpreted alongside scans, examination findings, and your medical history. A biopsy result does not by itself decide every treatment choice.

Your clinician may arrange a results appointment, further imaging, or another sample if the first specimen does not answer the clinical question. In some cancers, testing the tumour's genetic features can help guide treatment choices.

Follow the wound-care instructions you were given, keep the area clean as directed, and use only the pain relief recommended for you. Keep your results appointment and write down questions about the report, additional tests, and possible treatments. Ask when and how you will receive the result rather than relying on an online portal alone. Bring a trusted person if you expect difficult news.

Contact the biopsy team promptly for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, worsening redness, pus, fever, or pain that is not controlled by the advised medicine. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, fainting, severe weakness, or heavy bleeding. The urgency can vary with the biopsy site and the medicines you take, so use the discharge instructions you received.

Ask: When should I expect the report? What does each term in it mean? Do I need imaging or genomic tumour profiling? Which specialist will explain the result? If cancer is found, what are the next decisions and how soon should they happen?
