What Happens After a Biomechanical Assessment?

Short answer

After a biomechanical assessment, the clinician explains the movement findings and agrees a plan that may include exercises, footwear changes, or custom orthotics.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the findings are used

The assessment may show how your feet, ankles, knees, hips, and trunk move during walking, standing, running, or another relevant task. Your clinician connects these observations with your symptoms, activity goals, footwear, and medical history. The result is not simply a label; it is a working explanation of which loads or movement habits may be contributing to discomfort. Findings can also show that another evaluation is more appropriate when symptoms do not match a mechanical pattern.

If support under the foot is likely to help, the clinician may discuss whether an off-the-shelf insert is enough or whether custom orthotics should be considered. The choice depends on fit, comfort, symptoms, and your usual activities.

Your next steps

You may leave with a home exercise plan, advice to change training or work loads, footwear guidance, or a review appointment. Follow the plan gradually and record which activities improve or aggravate symptoms. If custom orthotics are recommended, bring the shoes you use most often and ask how to introduce them progressively. Comfort and function matter: tell the clinician if support causes rubbing, new pain, numbness, or a change in walking.

When to seek care

Contact the treating clinician if symptoms worsen quickly, a new area becomes painful, or a brace or insert causes skin injury, numbness, or colour change. Seek urgent medical attention for sudden severe pain after injury, inability to bear weight, a visibly deformed limb, or new weakness. A planned review is useful when the agreed exercises or footwear changes are not improving function.

Questions for your doctor

What finding best explains my symptoms? Which exercise should I prioritise first? How should I change activity while symptoms settle? Would custom orthotics add value for my goals? How will we judge whether the plan is helping, and when should it be reviewed?

Questions people ask

Will I need custom orthotics after the assessment?

Not necessarily. The clinician may recommend exercises, footwear changes, an ordinary insert, or custom orthotics depending on the findings and your goals.

Can I resume exercise after the assessment?

Often activity is adjusted rather than stopped completely, but the safe level depends on your symptoms and the plan made with your clinician.
