What happens after annual health check?

A health check may include measurements, questions about symptoms and habits, an examination and selected screening tests. Results can be reassuring, show a risk factor to monitor or reveal a finding that needs confirmation. One abnormal result does not always establish a diagnosis; the clinician may repeat a test, arrange an examination or refer you for a more specific assessment. The discussion should separate urgent concerns from routine prevention and explain why each next step is being suggested.

Keep a written record of results, medicines and the date of any review. Complete recommended tests or referrals, and bring questions to the appointment. Changes may include improving activity, food choices, sleep, smoking habits or alcohol use, tailored to your circumstances. If an ongoing condition is identified, a chronic disease review can organise monitoring, medicines and goals over time. Do not start or stop treatment based on a screening result without discussing it with a clinician.

Contact urgent services for chest pain, severe breathing trouble, sudden weakness, new confusion, fainting or severe allergic symptoms. Seek prompt advice for a rapidly worsening symptom, persistent high fever, blood loss or a result that the clinic marked as urgent. A routine health-check appointment should not replace immediate assessment when you feel seriously unwell.

Ask which results were outside the expected range, what they could mean, whether confirmation is needed, who will arrange follow-up, and what you can do before the next review.
