What Does Wrist Pain Feel Like With a Scaphoid Fracture?

The scaphoid is a small wrist bone near the base of the thumb. A fracture commonly follows a fall onto an outstretched hand, but a direct blow or sports injury can also cause it. Pain may be deep, aching, or sharp with particular movements. Tenderness in the anatomical snuffbox—the hollow made visible when you extend your thumb—is a useful examination finding, but pain location alone cannot confirm the injury. A first X-ray may not show every scaphoid fracture, so persistent focal tenderness needs clinical follow-up even when the initial image is reassuring.

After a wrist injury, stop activities that cause pain and keep the wrist supported in a splint if one is available. Avoid lifting, gripping, or using the hand to push yourself up. Apply a wrapped cold pack for short periods and keep the hand raised if it is swollen. Arrange prompt medical assessment, particularly when the pain is focused on the thumb side or started after a fall. A clinician may examine the wrist and decide whether repeat imaging or another scan is needed.

Seek urgent care after an injury if the wrist looks deformed, the hand becomes numb or unusually pale, the fingers feel cold, or you cannot move them normally. Get prompt assessment for severe or worsening pain, marked swelling, an open wound, or tenderness that remains over the thumb-side hollow. Do not rely on the amount of bruising to judge the injury: scaphoid fractures can have limited visible swelling.
