What does whole brain radiotherapy treat?

The treatment directs radiation across the whole brain to treat visible metastases and microscopic cancer cells in the treated area. It may help control symptoms such as headaches, seizures, weakness, or changes in thinking, although the response differs between people. It can be used for [Brain Metastases](/conditions/brain-metastases/) from cancers including [Small Cell Lung Cancer](/conditions/small-cell-lung-cancer/). A focused approach such as [Stereotactic Radiosurgery](/treatments/radiation-oncology/stereotactic-radiosurgery/) may be considered when only selected areas need treatment.

The radiation team plans the treatment using brain imaging and a stabilising mask or support. Sessions are usually brief, but the overall schedule depends on the treatment plan. Hair loss in the treated area, scalp irritation, tiredness, nausea, or temporary worsening of symptoms can occur. Tell the team about new neurological symptoms and ask how to manage medicines, including steroids or anti-seizure treatment.

Contact the oncology team urgently for a new seizure, worsening headache with vomiting, increasing confusion, marked sleepiness, new weakness, trouble speaking, or difficulty walking. Call emergency services for sudden severe neurological change or loss of consciousness.
