What does weakness on one side feel like with Bell's palsy?

Bell's palsy affects the facial nerve on one side. The corner of the mouth may droop, drinks may spill, and speech can sound slightly different because the lips are weaker. The affected eye may not close fully, feel dry or gritty, or water more than usual. Taste can change, and sound may seem uncomfortably loud on that side. Facial weakness is different from weakness in an arm or leg.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for new facial weakness because Bell's palsy is diagnosed after checking for other causes and treatment may be time-sensitive. Until reviewed, protect an eye that does not close by following clinician or pharmacist advice about lubricating drops and covering it safely during sleep. Avoid rubbing the eye and report pain, marked redness, or vision changes.

Call emergency services immediately if facial drooping begins with arm or leg weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, severe headache, loss of balance, or sudden vision changes.
