What does waters breaking feel like with preterm labour?

Before term, fluid may leak when you stand, walk, cough, or change position. You might also notice period-like cramps, lower backache, pelvic pressure, tightening that repeats, or a change in vaginal discharge. Preterm labour involves labour changes before the pregnancy reaches term, and the membranes can open before or during contractions. Urine leakage and normal discharge can feel similar, so the sensation alone cannot confirm what is happening. An assessment helps check the fluid, your cervix, infection signs, and the baby’s wellbeing.

Call your maternity unit or obstetric team immediately if you are leaking fluid before term, even if there is no pain. Put on a clean pad, record the time the wetness began, and observe its colour and smell. Avoid sex, tampons, swimming, and inserting anything into the vagina until advised. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint, have strong contractions, or are bleeding. The hospital may monitor contractions and fetal heart rate and may use examination or fluid testing.

Get emergency maternity help for heavy bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, fever, chills, foul-smelling fluid, green or brown fluid, or reduced fetal movements. If you feel something at the vaginal opening or have a sudden large gush, lie down while arranging urgent help and follow the maternity team’s instructions.
