What does waters breaking feel like with premature rupture of membranes?

Fluid may appear when you stand, turn in bed, cough, or change position, and it may continue to dampen underwear or a pad. It is often clear or pale, but fluid can be difficult to distinguish from urine or normal pregnancy discharge. Premature rupture of membranes means the fluid-filled membranes open before labour begins; if this happens before the pregnancy has reached term, it needs prompt assessment because infection and early birth need to be considered. Contractions may start later, or may already be present.

Contact your maternity unit or obstetric team promptly, even if the leak is small or stops. Wear a clean maternity pad and note the colour, smell, and amount of fluid. Avoid tampons, vaginal sex, and putting anything into the vagina until you have been assessed. Do not rely on home tests to decide whether the membranes have opened. The team may check your temperature, the baby’s wellbeing, and the fluid with an examination or other tests.

Seek urgent help for green, brown, or bloody fluid, fever, chills, worsening abdominal pain, regular contractions, or feeling unwell. Contact the maternity unit immediately if fetal movements are reduced, or if you see or feel something protruding from the vagina. Keep the pad available for the clinical team if possible.
