What does vulval skin changes feel like with genital warts?

Genital warts may appear as small flesh-coloured or slightly darker bumps, alone or in a cluster. Their surface can feel uneven, soft or rough. Some people notice itching, irritation, moisture or bleeding after friction, while others feel nothing. Growths may occur on the vulva, around the vaginal entrance or near the anus. Several non-wart conditions can cause bumps, colour changes or irritation, so appearance from a phone photo or self-check cannot provide a dependable diagnosis.

Arrange an examination with a sexual-health clinician, gynaecologist or GP. Do not cut, squeeze or use ordinary wart removers on genital skin. Avoid fragranced products and consider condoms during sexual contact until you have advice, remembering they do not cover every area of skin. A clinician can discuss treatment choices and whether screening for other infections is appropriate.

Seek prompt assessment for a growth that bleeds without friction, becomes ulcerated, is very painful, changes quickly or makes urination difficult. Arrange a routine appointment for any new vulval growth or persistent skin change, especially if you are pregnant or immunosuppressed.
