What does vulval pain feel like with vaginal thrush?

Thrush-related discomfort is often concentrated around the vulval skin and vaginal entrance. It may feel itchy, hot, tender or scraped, and can become more noticeable during urination or sexual contact. Redness, swelling and small surface cracks may accompany the soreness. A thick, white discharge can occur, although discharge is not present in every case and its appearance is not enough to confirm thrush. Similar symptoms can happen with dermatitis, bacterial imbalance or some sexually transmitted infections.

A clinician can check whether the symptoms fit thrush and may take a swab when the diagnosis is uncertain or symptoms return. Keep the area dry, avoid perfumed soaps and do not douche. Wear loose clothing and stop products that cause stinging. If you have had a confirmed episode before, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an appropriate antifungal treatment is suitable; avoid treating repeatedly when the pattern is new or different.

Seek care promptly for severe swelling, fever, pelvic pain, sores, bleeding, foul-smelling discharge or pain with urination that is intense. Book an assessment if symptoms do not improve after treatment, recur frequently or occur during pregnancy.

Ask whether a swab is useful, which treatment is appropriate, whether a partner needs assessment, and what symptoms would suggest a different cause.
