The discomfort may affect the outer genital skin and the area around the vaginal opening. It can feel itchy as well as painful, with rawness after scratching, washing or friction from clothing. The skin may look paler, thinner or crinkled, and small splits can make urination sting when urine touches the skin. Pain during sexual contact may occur if the skin is inflamed or delicate. These sensations can overlap with other vulval conditions, so the feeling alone cannot identify the cause.
