What does vulval pain feel like with a Bartholin cyst?

A blocked Bartholin gland can create a fluid-filled cyst beside the lower vaginal entrance. When the cyst is small, you may notice a local ache or no pain. As it enlarges, pressure can make walking, sitting, cycling, or sexual activity uncomfortable. Infection can turn the discomfort into throbbing or severe tenderness, with heat, redness, swelling, pus, or fever. Vulval pain has several possible causes, including skin irritation and other infections, so a clinician may need to inspect the area rather than relying on symptoms alone.

Rest from activities that rub the area and choose loose, breathable underwear. Warm water soaks may soothe mild discomfort. Do not squeeze or puncture the swelling. Book an examination if pain continues, interferes with daily activity, or comes back; treatment may involve professional drainage or another approach based on the findings.

Seek prompt care for rapidly worsening pain, fever, chills, spreading redness, pus, or trouble walking or sitting. An urgent review is also appropriate for a new unusual lump after menopause, bleeding, or a hard fixed area.
