What does a vulval lump feel like with genital warts?

Genital warts are growths associated with certain types of human papillomavirus. On the vulva, they may be skin-coloured, pink, or slightly darker, and can be flat, raised, or shaped like a small cauliflower. Some cause itching, irritation, bleeding after rubbing, or discomfort during sex; others cause no sensation. Similar-looking bumps can result from blocked glands, irritated skin, or other conditions, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. A clinician may inspect the area and offer testing when appropriate.

Avoid scratching, shaving over, or picking at the bumps, and do not use ordinary wart treatments on genital skin. Keep the area gently clean and arrange a sexual health or gynecology appointment for a new, changing, bleeding, or bothersome lump. Until assessed, condoms may reduce but do not remove the chance of skin-to-skin transmission.

Arrange prompt assessment for severe pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, repeated bleeding, an ulcer, or a lump that becomes hard or rapidly changes. Seek help sooner if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or worried about a recent sexual exposure.
