What does a vulval lump feel like with a Bartholin cyst?

The Bartholin glands sit near the lower vaginal entrance and help provide lubrication. If a gland duct becomes blocked, fluid can collect and form a cyst. A small cyst may feel soft or firm, move slightly under the skin, and cause little discomfort. A larger swelling can create pressure when sitting, walking, or having sex. If bacteria enter the cyst, an abscess may develop: the area can become hot, red, very tender, and swollen, with worsening pain or pus. A vulval lump has other possible causes, so an examination is the safest way to identify it.

Keep the area clean and avoid squeezing, piercing, or trying to drain the swelling yourself. Loose underwear and warm water soaks may reduce irritation. Arrange a medical appointment if the lump persists, grows, returns, or makes walking or sitting difficult. A clinician can examine it and discuss drainage or other treatment when needed.

Seek prompt medical care if the lump becomes rapidly more painful, hot, red, or tense, or if you develop fever, chills, pus, or difficulty walking. Urgent assessment is also sensible when a new lump appears after menopause or has an unusual hard, fixed, or bleeding quality.

Ask whether the swelling looks like a cyst or abscess, whether it needs drainage, and how to reduce the chance of recurrence. Mention pregnancy, diabetes, immune problems, or previous vulval lumps if relevant.
