What does vomiting feel like with pancreatitis?

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. Vomiting may follow a deep, steady pain in the upper abdomen that can spread toward the back. The abdomen may feel tender or swollen, and eating can make discomfort worse. Some people also develop fever, a fast heartbeat, or repeated nausea. Vomiting itself does not identify the cause, so the combination, intensity, and timing of symptoms need clinical assessment.

Severe upper-abdominal pain with vomiting should be assessed urgently rather than managed only at home. Avoid alcohol and rich foods while arranging care, and take only medicines that a clinician or pharmacist says are suitable. If you can drink without vomiting, use small sips of water. Do not drive yourself if pain, weakness, or dizziness is significant.

Seek emergency help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, pain spreading to the back, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, trouble breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, blood in vomit, or signs of dehydration. Prompt assessment matters because pancreatitis can require hospital treatment and fluid support.

Ask what may be causing the pain and vomiting, which tests are needed, what you may safely eat or drink, and which medicines to pause or avoid. Tell the clinician about alcohol use, gallbladder problems, recent procedures, and all medicines.
