What does vomiting feel like with heat stroke?

Vomiting is a common presentation of Heat Stroke and may occur with very hot skin, severe weakness, dizziness, headache, or confusion. Nausea can worsen while someone is exercising or staying in a hot environment. The person may feel faint, unsteady, or unable to think clearly; vomiting in this setting is an emergency warning rather than a symptom to watch at home.

Heat stroke happens when the body cannot control its temperature and brain function becomes affected. Sweating may be present or absent, so a dry skin surface does not rule it out. Vomiting can make fluid loss worse, while confusion, unusual behaviour, seizures, or loss of consciousness show that urgent treatment is needed.

Call emergency services immediately and move the person to a cool, shaded place. Remove excess clothing and cool the skin with wet cloths, cool water, or fanning while help is coming. Place an unconscious or confused person on their side and stay with them. Do not force drinks into someone who is confused, vomiting repeatedly, having a seizure, or unable to swallow safely.

Treat vomiting after significant heat exposure as urgent when it occurs with confusion, fainting, seizure, severe headache, hot skin, fast breathing, or marked weakness. Emergency assessment is also needed if symptoms continue after moving to a cool place, or if the person cannot drink safely. Do not let the person return to exercise or remain alone.

After urgent care, ask when normal activity and heat exposure can resume and how to plan fluid breaks, shade, clothing, and rest. Tell the clinician how long the person was in the heat, what cooling measures were used, and whether confusion or fainting occurred.
