What do vision changes in pregnancy feel like with pre-eclampsia?

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy-related condition involving raised blood pressure and effects on the body. Visual symptoms can happen when the condition affects the nervous system or the blood vessels supplying the eyes and brain. Some people describe a hazy view, difficulty focusing, light sensitivity, or a curtain-like gap. A headache, upper abdominal pain, sudden swelling, nausea, or feeling unwell can occur alongside the visual change. Other eye problems and migraine can also affect vision, so the symptom needs clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Stop driving and sit or lie somewhere safe while arranging medical advice. Note when the change began, whether it affects one or both eyes, and whether it is constant or comes and goes. Contact your maternity team, obstetric service, or an urgent medical service promptly; mention that you are pregnant and describe any headache or other symptoms. Do not wait for a routine appointment if the change is new or unusual.

Seek urgent assessment immediately for sudden visual loss, flashing lights with a severe headache, a blind spot, confusion, weakness, fainting, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or severe pain beneath the ribs. These features can signal a serious pregnancy complication. If the symptom has already settled, still report it promptly because a temporary episode can matter.
