What Does Visible Deformity After Injury Feel Like With an Elbow Dislocation?

The upper and lower arm bones no longer sit in their normal relationship at the elbow. This can create an obvious change in shape, rapid swelling, guarding, and a strong sense that the joint cannot be trusted to move. Pain usually increases with even small attempts to rotate the forearm.

A dislocation can occur with a fracture or injury to ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels. The outside appearance cannot reveal all of these problems, so urgent examination and imaging are needed before the joint is repositioned.

Keep the arm still in the position found, supporting it with a sling or folded clothing if this is comfortable. Do not bend, straighten, pull, or attempt to relocate the elbow. Avoid food and drink until emergency staff advise, because a procedure may be needed.

Remove rings and watches from the injured hand before swelling develops, without moving the elbow. Arrange emergency transport rather than driving if pain or restricted movement makes travel unsafe.

A visibly deformed elbow after injury needs emergency assessment. Call for immediate help if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, weak, or difficult to move, or if severe swelling, bleeding, or an open wound is present.

Ask: Are the hand’s circulation and nerve signals normal? Is there a fracture as well as the dislocation? How will the elbow be repositioned safely? How long should it be supported? Which exercises are safe, and what symptoms require urgent review?
