What does vaginal pessary fitting treat?

A pessary may reduce a vaginal bulge, pressure, heaviness, or discomfort linked with prolapse. Different shapes and sizes are available; a ring pessary is one commonly used design. Fitting is a clinical process that checks whether the device is comfortable, stays in place, and supports the affected area. It can be used for cystocele, uterine prolapse, or other pelvic organ prolapse, and may suit someone who wants to postpone or avoid surgery.

Follow instructions for cleaning, removal, and review appointments. Some pessaries can be removed by the user, while others need clinical support. Ask when sexual intercourse is suitable, whether vaginal oestrogen is relevant, and which activities are acceptable. Report rubbing, discharge with a bad smell, bleeding, or difficulty passing urine rather than trying to adjust an uncomfortable device repeatedly.

Arrange a prompt review for persistent pain, bleeding, sores, foul-smelling discharge, fever, or new urinary or bowel difficulty. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain, heavy bleeding, inability to urinate, or a pessary that cannot be removed when removal is required.
