What does vaginal odour feel like with bacterial vaginosis?

People often describe the smell as fish-like, musty, or stronger than their usual scent. It may be more noticeable when vaginal fluid mixes with semen or menstrual blood. Bacterial vaginosis can also cause a thin, greyish-white discharge, although some people have little discharge and no irritation. Odour alone cannot identify the cause, because other infections, retained products, or changes in the vaginal environment can produce similar symptoms.

Arrange an assessment if the smell is new, persistent, or accompanied by unusual discharge. A clinician may examine the discharge and offer a swab or other tests. Avoid douching, scented washes, and deodorant products inside or around the vagina, as these can worsen irritation and disturb the normal balance. Wash the outer area gently with water or an unperfumed cleanser, and do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek prompt medical advice for pelvic pain, fever, pain when urinating, bleeding outside your period, sores, or significant itching. Pregnancy, recent childbirth, or a possible exposure to a sexually transmitted infection also warrants timely assessment. Urgent care is appropriate if severe pain, faintness, or heavy bleeding occurs.
