What does vaginal discharge feel like with bacterial vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis is linked with a change in the balance of vaginal bacteria. Discharge may seem smooth, thin, or more fluid and may look white or grey. Some people notice little irritation, while others have mild itching or burning. These features overlap with other vaginal infections and irritations, so discharge texture or odour alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician can assess symptoms and choose testing or treatment when needed.

Arrange a medical assessment for a new, persistent, or recurrent change in discharge, particularly after sex with a new partner or if there is pelvic discomfort. Avoid douching and fragranced products, which can irritate vaginal tissue and make symptoms harder to interpret. Do not use leftover treatment for a different infection; the right treatment depends on the cause. Share the colour, texture, odour, timing, and any itching or pain with your clinician.

Seek prompt care for fever, lower abdominal or pelvic pain, pain during sex, bleeding outside your expected period, sores, or burning when you pass urine. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain, feeling very unwell, or pregnancy with concerning symptoms. These features can need evaluation beyond bacterial vaginosis.
