What does urinary urgency feel like with a urinary tract infection?

The need to urinate may arrive quickly and feel difficult to hold, even if only a small amount of urine comes out. You may also notice burning, pressure low in the abdomen, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or a feeling that your bladder has not emptied. Urinary Tract Infection can affect different parts of the urinary system, so symptoms differ between people. Urgency on its own does not establish the cause.

Contact a clinician if symptoms continue, interfere with sleep, or are new and unexplained. Describe the urgency, burning, urine appearance, pelvic discomfort, and any fever. A urine assessment can help guide care. Drink fluids according to your usual needs, avoid delaying urination, and do not use another person’s antibiotics or saved medicine. Follow the prescribed plan if treatment is recommended.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, vomiting, blood in the urine, or feeling markedly unwell. These features can occur when infection has moved beyond the bladder. Urgent help is also needed if you cannot pass urine or symptoms are rapidly worsening.
