What does urinary incontinence feel like with dementia?

A person with Dementia may not notice bladder fullness, may forget where the toilet is, or may struggle to explain the need to go. Leakage can happen after an urge, during the night, or because clothing fasteners are difficult to manage. Constipation, reduced mobility, medicines, and a urinary infection can also worsen bladder accidents, so a new change deserves assessment.

Keep the route to the toilet clear and well lit, use simple signs, and offer regular, calm toilet prompts. Easy-to-remove clothing, absorbent products, and a night light may reduce distress. Record when leakage occurs, drinks, bowel movements, and any changes in alertness; this gives a clinician useful detail. Encourage fluids unless a clinician has advised a restriction.

Arrange medical advice for new or rapidly worsening leakage, pain when passing urine, fever, blood in the urine, vomiting, or marked change in behaviour. Seek urgent help if the person is very drowsy, has severe lower abdominal pain, cannot pass urine, or seems suddenly much more confused.
