What does urinary incontinence feel like with benign prostatic hyperplasia?

An enlarged prostate can narrow the urine channel and make bladder emptying harder. You may need to strain, wait for the stream to start, pass urine weakly or stop and start, then notice drops after leaving the toilet. A strong sudden urge, frequent daytime visits and waking at night can make leakage difficult to prevent.

Urinary leakage has several possible causes, including infection, constipation, neurological conditions and some medicines. Incontinence alone does not establish benign prostatic hyperplasia. A clinician may ask about the stream, pain, blood, fever, fluid intake and medicines, then assess how well the bladder empties.

Arrange an appointment if leakage is new, recurring or accompanied by a weaker stream, urgency or incomplete emptying. Note when leaks happen, how often you urinate, whether you strain and whether symptoms disturb sleep. Reduce bladder irritants only if your clinician advises, and do not restrict fluids so much that you become dehydrated. Treatment depends on the cause and may include monitoring, medicines or other options.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, develop severe lower-abdominal pain, see blood in the urine, or have fever, chills or burning with rapidly worsening symptoms. Sudden inability to empty the bladder can be painful and needs prompt treatment.
