What does tetanus vaccination treat?

Tetanus bacteria can enter through breaks in the skin, including contaminated cuts, punctures, burns, or animal bites. The vaccine trains immune protection against tetanus toxin. It cannot remove dirt, close a wound, or reverse toxin effects that have already developed. A clinician may review your vaccination history and the wound together to decide what protection is appropriate.

Rinse a wound with clean running water, remove visible dirt without digging into the tissue, and cover it with a clean dressing. Seek medical advice for a deep, dirty, puncture, crush, or bite wound, or if you cannot recall your vaccination history. Wound cleaning, vaccination, and other treatment decisions are separate parts of care; stitches may not be suitable for every contaminated wound.

Get urgent care for trouble swallowing, jaw stiffness, painful muscle tightening, breathing difficulty, spreading redness, severe swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or a wound with exposed deeper tissue. Also seek prompt assessment after an animal bite or a puncture wound that may contain debris.
