What do swollen lymph nodes feel like with metastatic cancer?

Nodes near the original cancer or along a drainage pathway may enlarge in the neck, armpit, chest, abdomen, or groin. Some are painless; others are tender because of inflammation or pressure. A node can feel different from nearby tissue, but infection and other non-cancer causes can produce similar findings. Tests are needed to clarify what is happening.

Arrange a medical review for a new, persistent, or growing lump, especially if you have a history of cancer. Write down its location, when it appeared, and any related cough, pain, fever, night sweats, fatigue, or weight change. Your clinician may compare both sides, review previous records, and recommend imaging or sampling.

Seek prompt advice for a node that enlarges quickly, becomes fixed, or causes ongoing pain. Get urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, sudden severe swelling, confusion, or profound weakness.

Ask whether the location matches a known drainage area, which tests can distinguish spread from infection, and how results will affect the care plan. Ask when to report a change and who to contact outside scheduled visits.
