What do swollen lymph nodes feel like with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia?

Most people with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia notice swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin. They may be painless and move slightly under the skin, although pressure can become uncomfortable when a group of nodes grows. Nodes deeper in the chest or abdomen cannot be felt from outside and may instead cause fullness, cough or abdominal discomfort. The texture and tenderness of a lump do not establish its cause; infections and other conditions can also enlarge lymph nodes. Assessment uses an examination alongside blood tests and, when needed, imaging or a tissue sample.

Note where the swelling is, when it began, whether it is changing, and whether you have fever, night sweats, tiredness or unplanned weight change. Arrange a clinical assessment for persistent or growing swelling. Do not repeatedly press the area, because this can make it sore and does not show whether the node is active.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, sudden severe weakness, or rapidly increasing swelling. Contact your clinical team promptly for persistent fever, drenching night sweats, marked tiredness, unusual bruising, or a clear change in known nodes.

Ask which nodes are enlarged, what tests are planned, whether monitoring or treatment is appropriate, and which changes should prompt an earlier review.
