What do swollen glands feel like with strep throat?

The lymph nodes under the jaw and along the front of the neck can enlarge as the throat responds to infection. They may feel tender, firm, and easier to notice when you press the area or swallow. Strep throat commonly brings a sudden sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, red or swollen tonsils, and sometimes visible spots on the tonsils. Cough and a runny nose are less typical of strep than of many viral illnesses, but symptoms overlap. A neck lump alone cannot tell which infection is present.

Arrange an assessment if the sore throat is severe, starts suddenly, or comes with fever and tender neck nodes. A clinician may examine the throat and decide whether testing is appropriate. Sip fluids, choose cool or soft foods, and rest. Wash hands and avoid sharing drinks, utensils, or toothbrushes. If antibiotics are prescribed, follow the directions and ask when school, work, or close contact can safely resume.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, drooling, inability to swallow saliva, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, difficulty opening the mouth, or swelling that is quickly worsening. These features can signal a deeper throat problem rather than uncomplicated swollen nodes. Seek review if the glands remain enlarged after the throat symptoms settle, or if they become hot, red, or increasingly painful.
