What do swollen glands feel like with rubella?

Rubella-related lymph nodes are often small, tender, and noticeable behind the ears, at the base of the skull, or along the back of the neck. They may hurt when pressed or when the neck moves. A mild fever, sore throat, tiredness, joint aches, and a fine rash can accompany the swelling; some people have few symptoms. The rash may begin on the face and move downwards. These signs can resemble other viral illnesses, so a lump cannot identify rubella on its own.

Contact a clinician by phone if rubella is suspected, and explain the symptoms before attending in person. Keep away from pregnant people until you receive medical advice, because rubella infection during pregnancy can harm an unborn baby. Rest, drink regularly, and use suitable comfort measures. Avoid sharing drinks and close face-to-face contact. Do not rely on the presence or absence of a rash to decide whether it is safe to mix with others.

Seek prompt advice for a new rash with swollen neck nodes, especially after contact with someone unwell or if pregnancy is possible. A pregnant person with possible exposure should contact a maternity or medical service promptly. Get urgent help for breathing trouble, confusion, severe headache, a stiff neck, dehydration, or rapidly worsening illness. Painful, red, or quickly enlarging nodes also deserve assessment.
