What do swollen glands feel like with mumps?

Mumps can inflame salivary glands near the cheeks and below the ears, making the face or jaw look fuller on one side or both. Nearby lymph nodes may feel like tender, moveable lumps in the upper neck. Chewing, swallowing, or opening the mouth may hurt, and the area can feel tight rather than like a single obvious lump. Fever, headache, tiredness, and reduced appetite may occur. These features overlap with other illnesses, so swollen glands do not establish the diagnosis by themselves.

Call a healthcare service before going in if mumps is possible; the illness can spread through close contact and shared saliva. Rest, sip fluids, and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. A cool or warm compress may ease facial tenderness. Avoid sharing utensils, bottles, or towels, and follow local advice about staying away from school, work, or group settings. Do not squeeze the swelling or take someone else’s prescription medicine.

Arrange prompt assessment for suspected mumps, particularly when jaw swelling follows fever or a painful throat. Seek urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, repeated vomiting, fainting, difficulty breathing, or inability to swallow fluids. New severe pain or swelling in the testicles, lower abdomen, or breasts also needs urgent medical advice. A clinician can check the salivary glands, lymph nodes, hydration, and possible complications.
