What do swollen ankles feel like with varicose veins?

Veins in the legs may allow blood to pool more readily when you stand, increasing pressure in the lower-leg tissues. Swelling can affect both ankles, leave sock marks, and make the skin feel stretched by evening. Visible twisted or enlarged veins, itching, or a dull ache may occur alongside it. The pattern does not confirm the cause: ankle swelling can also occur with other vein, heart, kidney or medicine-related problems.

Walk gently and move your ankles during long periods of sitting. Rest with your legs raised when possible, and avoid tight clothing around the waist or legs. Moisturiser can help dry, itchy skin, but do not apply it to an open sore. A clinician can advise whether measured compression is appropriate; do not use compression garments without advice if you have reduced arterial circulation or unexplained one-sided swelling.

Get urgent help for sudden one-sided swelling, severe calf pain, chest pain, breathlessness, fainting or coughing blood. Seek prompt assessment if a vein becomes hard and painful, the leg is hot and red, or a skin ulcer or bleeding vein develops. Arrange a routine appointment when swelling is persistent, worsening, or interfering with sleep or walking.
