What does swelling in pregnancy feel like with pre-eclampsia?

Mild ankle swelling can occur during pregnancy, especially after activity or standing. Swelling that appears quickly, becomes pronounced, or involves the hands and face is more concerning and should be reported. Pre-eclampsia can also affect the body without obvious swelling, so blood pressure, urine protein, and other clinical checks help guide assessment.

Write down when the swelling started, where it is, and whether it is changing. Contact your maternity team for advice rather than relying on home measures alone. Rest comfortably, avoid long periods upright, and keep monitoring visits. Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed; do not start a diuretic or herbal product without approval.

Seek urgent maternity advice for a severe headache, changes in vision, pain under the ribs, sudden nausea or vomiting, difficulty breathing, chest pain, or swelling that increases quickly. Reduced fetal movement also needs prompt contact with your maternity service. Assessment is needed even if the swelling itself is not painful.
