What does swelling in pregnancy feel like with gestational hypertension?

Mild swelling can occur as pregnancy changes fluid balance, especially after standing or later in the day. Swelling that is more noticeable in the hands or face, appears suddenly, or continues after rest deserves attention because it can occur alongside raised blood pressure. Some people notice rings or shoes becoming tight, skin that looks stretched, or a puffy face. Gestational hypertension may have no obvious feeling at all, so blood-pressure checks matter even when swelling seems minor.

Tell your maternity team about new, worsening, or unusual swelling and arrange a blood-pressure assessment. Resting on your side, changing position, avoiding long periods of standing, and keeping comfortably active may ease ordinary fluid-related swelling. Do not take water tablets or start a treatment for blood pressure without medical advice. Your clinician may check your blood pressure, urine, symptoms, and blood tests to decide whether monitoring or treatment is needed.

Seek urgent maternity assessment for a severe or persistent headache, blurred vision or flashing lights, pain beneath the ribs, sudden marked swelling of the face or hands, shortness of breath, chest pain, confusion, or a seizure. Contact your maternity service promptly if you feel significantly unwell or notice a rapid change, even if you are unsure whether the swelling is related to blood pressure.
