What does surgical management of miscarriage treat?

The procedure, sometimes called evacuation, ERPC, or D&C, uses instruments passed through the vagina and cervix to remove tissue from inside the uterus. It may be considered when tissue has not passed, bleeding is heavy or ongoing, infection is suspected, or medication has not worked. It can also be used in selected cases of molar pregnancy or retained placental tissue. The clinician will explain whether surgery, medicine, or waiting is suitable for your situation.

Ask which anaesthetic is planned, whether you need to avoid food or drink beforehand, and what medicines to take or pause. Arrange transport and support for the recovery period. Your team may discuss blood tests, ultrasound findings, tissue testing, contraception, and when it is safe to resume normal activities.

Follow the discharge instructions about bleeding, pain relief, bathing, intercourse, and follow-up. Seek urgent care for soaking pads quickly, worsening severe pain, fever, faintness, offensive discharge, or feeling increasingly unwell. Contact your team if bleeding or pain is not settling as expected.
