What does stoma surgery treat?

A surgeon may create a colostomy from the large bowel or an ileostomy from the small bowel. In cancer care, this can be part of surgery for bowel cancer or rectal cancer, especially when a section of bowel is removed or needs time to heal. The stoma may be temporary or intended to remain, depending on the operation and how the bowel can be safely reconnected. Output is collected in a stoma appliance attached to the skin. The stoma itself has no ordinary sensation, but the surrounding skin can become sore and needs gentle care.

A stoma nurse can show you how to empty and change the appliance, protect the surrounding skin, and recognise your usual output. Keep supplies available, drink according to your clinical advice, and tell the team if the appliance leaks repeatedly or the skin stays painful. Recovery guidance depends on the operation and your bowel function.

Contact your surgical team urgently if the stoma changes colour, stops working with cramping or vomiting, becomes markedly swollen, or produces heavy bleeding. Seek prompt advice for fever, worsening abdominal pain, signs of dehydration, or skin breakdown that does not settle.

Ask why the stoma is needed, whether it is expected to be temporary, where it will be placed, how to protect the skin, and who to contact about appliance problems.
