What does spinal fusion treat?

The surgeon removes or prepares material between vertebrae, places bone graft material, and may use screws, rods, or a cage to hold the area steady while bone grows across it. The goal is to limit painful motion and support alignment; it does not repair every source of back pain.

It may be considered for degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, or a stress-related defect called spondylolysis when symptoms, examination findings, and imaging fit together. The operation and its hardware vary according to the spinal level and the problem being treated.

Ask which spinal level is involved, what non-surgical options remain, and how fusion is expected to change your pain or function. If surgery is recommended, discuss bone health, smoking or nicotine use, medicines, wound care, movement limits, and a gradual rehabilitation plan. Recovery is staged, with walking and safe daily activity usually introduced before more demanding exercise.

Contact the surgical team promptly for worsening weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, increasing wound redness or drainage, fever, or severe pain that is not settling as directed. Sudden major leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control needs urgent medical assessment.
