What does sore throat feel like with tonsillitis?

Sore Throat is a very common presentation of Tonsillitis. The discomfort may be scratchy at first and then become aching or sharp, especially when you swallow. The tonsils can look enlarged and red, with spots or a coating in some cases. You may notice a muffled voice, unpleasant breath, headache, fever, or tender glands along the neck. Pain can sometimes be felt toward the ears because nearby nerves share pathways.

Tonsillitis may be caused by a virus or bacteria, and similar symptoms can occur with other throat illnesses. Sore throat alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician can assess the tonsils, temperature, hydration, and other symptoms before advising on treatment.

Rest, drink fluids often, and choose soft foods that require little chewing. Warm drinks, cool liquids, or ice may soothe the throat. Avoid smoke and other irritants. Use pain relief only as directed on the label, and ask a pharmacist about safe choices for children, pregnancy, or long-term conditions. Do not share personal cups or utensils, and wash your hands frequently.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, drooling, inability to swallow fluids, severe one-sided swelling, or trouble opening the mouth. Arrange medical advice for persistent fever, worsening pain, repeated tonsillitis, or signs of dehydration such as dizziness and very dark urine. A clinician should review symptoms that are severe or failing to improve.
