What does sore throat feel like with influenza?

Influenza often brings a dry cough, chills, headache, muscle aches and pronounced tiredness along with throat discomfort. Swallowing may sting, and talking can irritate the throat further. Symptoms can begin abruptly, although not everyone has the same mixture or intensity. A sore throat cannot distinguish influenza from other viral infections by itself; a clinician may use the overall pattern, timing and testing when needed.

Rest, drink fluids in small frequent amounts and use warm broths or cool drinks for comfort. Choose light foods if your appetite is low, and avoid smoke. Limit close contact while feverish or coughing and wash your hands after blowing your nose. Speak with a pharmacist or clinician early if you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised or living with a long-term condition, because treatment decisions can depend on personal risk.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, blue lips, confusion, collapse or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange medical advice if fever or weakness is worsening, you improve and then deteriorate, or coughing causes significant chest discomfort. Children, older adults and people with ongoing medical conditions may need earlier assessment when influenza symptoms are substantial.
