What does sore throat feel like with glandular fever?

Short answer
Sore Throat is a very common presentation of Glandular Fever, often feeling severe, raw or painful when swallowing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common combination
- Severe throat pain, swollen tonsils and tender neck glands
- Activity advice
- Avoid strenuous activity until medically cleared
Why the throat can feel severe
The tonsils may become enlarged and red, sometimes with pale patches. Tender glands in the neck, marked tiredness, fever and headache can occur alongside the throat pain. The combination may last longer than an ordinary short respiratory illness, and energy can remain low after the throat starts improving. Throat appearance alone cannot confirm glandular fever, because other infections can look similar.
Comfort and recovery
Take frequent sips of water and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Rest according to your energy, avoid alcohol, and do not share drinks or utensils while unwell. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about suitable pain relief. Avoid strenuous activity and contact sports until a clinician advises that returning is safe, because glandular fever can affect the spleen even when throat symptoms are easing.
When assessment is needed
Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have breathing difficulty, severe one-sided throat swelling, or sudden strong pain in the upper left abdomen. Arrange medical review if exhaustion is pronounced, you cannot maintain fluids, or symptoms are not settling. A clinician can assess the tonsils and glands and decide whether testing is appropriate.
Questions to bring
Could glandular fever explain my throat and fatigue? How long should I avoid strenuous activity? Which medicines should I avoid or use cautiously?

Questions people ask
Can glandular fever make swallowing painful?
Yes. Enlarged, inflamed tonsils can make swallowing feel raw and difficult.
Why is activity restricted during recovery?
Glandular fever can enlarge the spleen, so strenuous activity may need to wait for medical advice.
