Short answer

Snoring is a common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis when nasal swelling makes nighttime breathing noisier through the mouth or nose.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can feel like

Allergic rhinitis can swell the tissues inside the nose and increase mucus, narrowing the usual nasal airflow. During sleep, air moving through the narrowed passages can make soft tissues vibrate and produce snoring. You may not feel the snoring itself, but you might wake with a dry mouth, blocked nose, sore throat, or unrefreshing sleep. A partner may notice noisy breathing, mouth breathing, or restless sleep. Snoring has other possible causes, so nasal allergy symptoms should be considered alongside sleep and breathing changes.

What you can do

Reduce known allergy triggers in the bedroom, keep bedding clean, and use saline to moisturise or clear the nose if appropriate. Sleeping on your side may reduce noisy breathing for some people. Avoid smoke exposure and ask a clinician or pharmacist before using a decongestant or medicated nasal spray for repeated symptoms. If congestion is frequent, an assessment can identify a suitable longer-term approach and check whether another sleep-related problem is present.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. Arrange a medical review if someone observes pauses in breathing, gasping, choking, marked daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or persistent loud snoring. Review is also appropriate when nasal blockage remains troublesome despite reducing triggers.

Questions people ask

Can allergic rhinitis cause snoring without a cold?

Yes. Ongoing nasal swelling and mucus from allergy can narrow airflow even when there is no infection.

Why might I wake with a dry mouth?

Nasal blockage can encourage mouth breathing during sleep, which may leave the mouth and throat dry on waking.
