What does slurred speech feel like with stroke?

A person may know exactly what they want to say but be unable to move the lips, tongue, or facial muscles clearly. Their words can become slow, garbled, unusually quiet, or hard to form. Stroke can also affect language itself: a person may use the wrong words, struggle to understand speech, or be unable to speak. Speech changes may occur with facial drooping, weakness or numbness on one side, loss of balance, vision change, or a severe headache.

If slurred speech begins suddenly, call emergency services immediately and state that a stroke may be happening. Note the time the person was last known to be well, keep them safe and still, and follow the emergency operator's instructions. Do not give food, drink, or medication unless instructed. Do not drive the person yourself, because emergency teams can begin assessment during transport.

Emergency assessment is needed for sudden slurred speech even when it is mild, isolated, or improves after a short time. Symptoms that disappear can still represent a temporary interruption of blood flow and require urgent evaluation. Treat new speech difficulty as time-sensitive, particularly when another person notices it or other neurological symptoms are present.

Ask what caused the speech change, which warning signs should prompt immediate help, and how to take prescribed medicines safely. Tell the clinician when symptoms started, what changed first, and whether weakness, numbness, balance, swallowing, or vision were affected.
