What does thickened skin feel like with corns and calluses?

A callus is usually a broader patch of firm, thickened skin over a pressure point, such as the sole or heel. A corn is often smaller and more focused, with a dense centre that can hurt when pressed. Both may feel less sensitive than nearby skin, while a deep corn can cause a sharp, pinching sensation in shoes or during walking. Cracks may form when thick dry skin loses flexibility.

Wear shoes with enough room for your toes and cushioning that does not press on the sore spot. Soft socks, protective pads, and reducing the activity that causes rubbing may help. Moisturising can soften dry surrounding skin. Do not cut the thickened area yourself or use strong wart products on it; a podiatrist or clinician can remove excess skin safely and look for the pressure source.

Arrange an assessment if the area bleeds, drains, becomes hot or red, opens into a sore, or makes walking difficult. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or immune problems should have foot thickening checked before self-treatment, because a small injury may be harder to notice or heal.

Ask whether the area is a corn, callus, wart, or another lesion, what footwear change could reduce pressure, and whether your foot shape or walking pattern is contributing. Mention pain, numbness, cracks, previous sores, and any medical condition affecting healing.
