What Does Skin Redness Feel Like With Cellulitis?

Cellulitis is an infection affecting deeper layers of skin. The red area may feel hot compared with nearby skin and can become firm, painful, or increasingly swollen. The border may expand, and nearby lymph nodes can feel tender. A break in the skin, insect bite, wound, or irritated area can provide an entry point, but the starting point may be hard to see.

Arrange prompt medical assessment because cellulitis may need prescription treatment. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or scratching it, and rest the affected limb if movement is uncomfortable. You can gently mark the edge of redness to notice whether it spreads, but do not delay care while monitoring it. Do not share towels or apply leftover medicines without advice.

Seek urgent care if redness is spreading quickly, pain is severe or worsening, the skin develops blisters or dark discoloration, or you feel feverish, confused, faint, or very unwell. Redness around the eye, face, hand, or genitals deserves prompt attention, as does cellulitis in someone with reduced immunity or poor circulation.

Ask what may have allowed infection into the skin, how to take the prescribed treatment, and which changes should trigger reassessment. Tell the clinician about allergies, recent wounds, bites, procedures, diabetes, circulation problems, or immune conditions.
