What Does Skin Rash Feel Like With Hives?

Hives commonly feel intensely itchy, prickly, or warm. Individual welts may be pale, pink, or red and can join into larger patches. They often change shape or move while the surrounding skin looks fairly normal. Pressure, heat, infection, medicines, foods, or other triggers may be involved, although the trigger is not always found.

Use a cool compress, wear loose clothing, and avoid scratching or rubbing the affected skin. Keep showers lukewarm and choose gentle, fragrance-free products. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antihistamine is suitable for you, including if you are pregnant, caring for a child, or taking other medicines. Note what happened before the welts appeared and whether they recur.

Get urgent help if hives occur with swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Arrange medical advice if the rash is painful rather than itchy, leaves bruising, persists, or comes with fever or feeling very unwell.

Ask whether the pattern fits hives, which medicines are appropriate for you, and whether a recent medicine, infection, food, heat exposure, or pressure could be a trigger. Mention swelling, breathing symptoms, bruising, or repeated episodes.
